Certifications
Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI)
BPI is the absolute standard in U.S. composting. BPI and the US Composting Council (USCC) use the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifications to certify products as compostable.
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
In order for a product to be BPI certified it must meet a rigorous set of ASTM requirements. Eco-Products items fall into two categories as specified by ASTM: ASTM D6400 and ASTM D6868.
ASTM D6400
This specification covers plastics and products made from plastics that are designed to be composted in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities.
ASTM 6868
This specification covers biodegradable plastics and products (including packaging), where plastic film or sheet is attached to substrates and the entire product or package is designed to be composted in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities. This specification also covers the degradability of pulp-based products such as sugar cane/bagasse.
