Food Waste Management Cost Calculator
The EPA has an online Food Waste Management Cost Calculator which estimates the cost
competitiveness of alternatives to food waste disposal, including source reduction, donation,
composting, and recycling of yellow grease. The calculator was created to demonstrate that
environmentally and socially responsible food waste management is cost-effective for many
businesses and waste streams. The more you know about your current waste management costs,
the more accurate the estimate.

Third Party Certification
The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is a multi-stakeholder association of key
individuals and groups from government, industry and academia, promoting the use, and
recycling of biodegradable polymeric materials (via composting). Be sure to look for the
BPI compostable logo when evaluating claims of compostability.

EPIC has graciously allowed us to
reprint this paper that explains why evidence from North American landfills supports their
case that biodegradable anything in a landfill does not extend landfill space or ever go away.

28% diversion rate reported the previous year and is equivalent to 3.9 million tons of waste. Interestingly, where
the demand and market value of recovered materials has decreased in the current economy, participation in diversion
has increased in Colorado.
