What
We Do
Footprint (n) :
A marked effect or impression left At Eco-Products, we
are keenly aware of the situation our society will be in if changes are
not made to the way that corporations large and small operate. Keep
reading to learn about the ways that Eco-Products strives to limit the
“effect and impression” our business has on the Earth.
Sustainability Footprint - Environmental
Management System (EMS) It is crucial for companies to
become aware of precisely the impact that business operations are having
on the environment. That is why we have instituted an Environmental
Management System (EMS) with the help of the State of Colorado and its
Environmental Leadership Program. An EMS enables an organization to
benchmark the aspects and impacts associated with four key elements:
Air/Energy, Water, Waste, and Social Considerations. Companies can then
use that data to track and quantify improvements in resource
consumption.
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) While it is important to control the
resource use that occurs at our company headquarters, it is equally
crucial to be aware of the impact our products have as they move along
the supply chain. With this in mind, Eco-Products commissioned a report
entitled, “Cradle to Distribution Dock Carbon Equivalent Emissions of
Eco-Products PLA-Coated Hot Cups” – submitted Fall 2008 by BCS,
Incorporated. This report details all of the carbon emissions generated
by our hot cups beginning with their birth in Nebraska and Oregon, all
the way to their arrival in one of our distribution centers. Similar
reports on our Sugarcane products, as well as our PLA Cold Cups, are
forthcoming.
Carbon Offsets Emissions from the transportation of raw
materials and finished goods account for approximately 12% of the total
greenhouse gas emissions associated with our products. At the end of
each quarter we calculate our total GHG emissions and purchase a
corresponding number of Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) from
Renewable Choice Energy here in Boulder. The revenue generated from the
VER purchases goes to funding methane capture projects here in the
United States.

Global Sourcing The subject of where a company does its
manufacturing comes up frequently in today’s global economy. Our goal is
to provide customers with the highest quality eco-friendly foodservice
disposables available in the market today. Presently, we meet this goal
by utilizing the world’s best biopolymer technology in countries all
over the world, including North America. More domestic locations are
being evaluated in an effort to decrease the carbon emissions associated
with the transportation of our products, and to drive business to the
manufacturing sector of the US economy. Eco-Products operates a
global manufacturing base, determined by resource availability and the
location of advanced technology. This allows us to provide products made
from renewable resources to our customers at competitive prices. Through
our success and growth, we have built a company with 80 employees here
in the US, and have provided business opportunities for a national
network of distributors and broker partners. In the past 12 months
alone, we have added over 50 jobs at our U.S. headquarters.
Solar Power In
our new facility at 4755 Walnut we have installed a 49 kW photo-voltaic
system – the largest commercial solar installation in Boulder County.
The system allows us to generate approximately 75% of the energy
required to run our Boulder headquarters from a clean, renewable source.
Waste Diversion
Supporting waste diversion from landfills is at the heart of what we do.
All of our products are designed with this in mind, and we do business
at our Boulder headquarters with this in mind as well. Anything that can
be recycled or composted is, helping us to divert approximately 90% of
our waste from landfills.
Alternative Transportation Incentive Whether it’s biking,
running, walking, taking the bus, or driving a hybrid vehicle, our
employees get a little something extra at the end of each month for
consistently commuting in eco-friendly ways.
